Norway Spruce are of European origin. They have been commonly used as an ornamental in America since the 1800's, having been introduced in colonial times. Norway Spruce have consistent dark green color. They are the fastest growing of the cold tolerant spruces. They are much more tolerant on heavy, wet soils than many of the other evergreens. Also, they are more shade tolerant and resistant to foliage diseases. They transplant well. All of these attributes makes for a reliable performer on the landscape. Norway Spruce become very large trees sooner than many other evergreens. Keep this in mind when placing them in the landscape. For all of the above reasons, they are a good choice for windbreaks, in areas large enough to accommodate their eventual size.
