Black Hills Spruce are a geographical variety of White Spruce. They are an isolated population of White Spruce that grows in the Black Hills of South Dakota. They are one of our most popular ornamental. They are naturally more dense and slower growing. They have short needles that are light green to light blue green in color. The foliage and texture is attractive. They are fairly tolerant of harsh conditions, such as wind, heat and cold. They aren't as sensitive to light shade and heavier soils as some others. They are a reliable landscape tree and should be used where their slower growth is an asset, and not where a fast growing tree is desired.
